Jack had been in a meeting when his phone rang. He silenced it and hoped whoever it was left a message. As soon as he was done he checked to see who the call was from, expecting Kim but pleasantly surprised to see it was Janet. He listened to the voicemail, before checking the time and calling her.
He poured himself a drink and settled in as the phone rang. She very well could have gone to bed early, or be busy. It was a chance he took in calling her. He was always glad to hear from her, their night together not the entire factor in that.

Jack was a fresh face outside of her world. In a time when her world seemed to be getting more and more tangled, she had thought it was a good thing to talk to someone outside of all that baggage. Someone who had an unbiased perspective and who she could confide in without it getting back to anyone.
He was on the other side of the country. She might never physically see him again. In that way, he had plausible deniability.
It was getting late when her phone rang; she was three hours ahead of him, and already laying in her bed, watching something random on TV. She was glad that he had called her back, balancing the phone on her bare shoulder. "Hi, Jack," she said softly. "I'm glad you called. Do you...can I talk to you about something?"
Her voice sounded worn. It had been a long day, but he knew all about long days.
